What we collect
An account holds your email address, your display name if you provide one, your plan, the language you use the site in, and the date you signed up. Using the product stores the text you translate together with its result, your saved items, groups and tags, the conversations you choose to save, and the files and photos you upload for document or photo translation. Speech you record for voice input, Voice or Talk is sent to our speech-to-text provider to be turned into text; we do not store the recording.
Anonymous use
Without an account, your translation history stays in your browser's local storage and is not sent to us as history. If you later create an account, the app offers to import that local history into it.
Who processes your data
We rely on external providers to deliver the features: Google Cloud Translation for text translation, Google Cloud Vision for reading text in images, OpenAI and Anthropic for dictionary entries, pronunciation and rewriting, Soniox and OpenAI for speech-to-text, including the live transcription in Voice and Talk, Amazon SES for sign-in emails, Stripe for payments, and — once you have accepted cookies, or in the United States unless you have opted out — Google Analytics and Google Ads for measuring how the product is used and how our campaigns perform, and OpenAI's ad measurement for telling which of our ads in ChatGPT led to a sign-up or a subscription, which receives a one-way hash of your email address rather than the address itself. Each receives only what its feature needs, and Stripe — not us — handles your card details.
Cookies
We set a session cookie once you sign in and a token used to protect requests against cross-site forgery. Both are required for the app to work and are always on. We also set a few preference cookies that only remember your own choices on this browser and are never used to track you: tl_locale (the site language, one year), tl_translate_pair (your last language pair, one year), tl_translate_prefs (text size, read-aloud and transcript settings, one year), tl_consent (your answer about cookies, one year) and tl_checkout_pending (a mark kept for 15 minutes while a payment is confirmed). Your anonymous history and unsent drafts are kept in your browser's local and session storage. Beyond those, we load Google Tag Manager, which places Google Analytics and Google advertising cookies so we can see how the product is used and measure our campaigns, and OpenAI's measurement pixel, which sets __oppref (the ChatGPT ad you arrived from, 30 days), __obref (a random browser identifier, one year) and __oaiq_consent (your answer, 30 days) so we can tell which of our ads led to a sign-up or a subscription. Outside the United States, none of these analytics and advertising cookies is set until you accept: you choose when you first arrive, and you can change your answer at any time from the Cookie settings link in the footer (on a phone, in the menu). In the United States these cookies are on from your first visit, and you can turn them off at any time from the Your Privacy Choices link in the same place. Which of the two applies follows the country our network provider derives from your IP address. Wherever you are, if your browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal we treat that as a refusal without asking.
Retention
Your history, saved items and saved conversations stay until you delete them or delete your account. Files and photos uploaded for document and photo translation are removed automatically 30 days after upload. Voice recordings are not kept: the audio goes to the speech-to-text provider and only the resulting text comes back. Dictionary entries and pronunciations are cached without personal identifiers so the same lookup can be reused across users.
Your choices in the United States
Some US state privacy laws, California's among them, count letting advertising partners such as Google and OpenAI measure our ads with cookies as selling personal information or sharing it for targeted advertising, even though no money changes hands. We do not sell your personal information for money. You can opt out of this selling and sharing at any time through the Your Privacy Choices link in the footer, which turns off the analytics and advertising cookies described above and the OpenAI measurement pixel. A Global Privacy Control signal from your browser counts as the same opt-out, and we apply it automatically. An opt-out applies to the browser you made it in, you can change your mind from the same link, and opting out does not change what the product does for you.
Your rights and contact
You can ask for a copy of your data, correct it, or have it deleted — deleting your account removes your history and saved items. Write to [email protected] and we will respond within 30 days.
